Grand Brilliance Sdn Bhd

Introduction
Media Prima’s content creation and content sales and distribution subsidiary, Grand Brilliance Sdn Bhd (GBSB), has grown to become the nation’s premier content production company with a string of hit movies and award-winning television series. GBSB is also responsible for the distribution of selected foreign-made films in Malaysia, and marketing and distribution of Media Prima’s content in the international scene.

1994
  • GBSB was established on 1 October.
1996
  • GBSB’s first film, Lurah Dendam, starring Raja Azura and Ridzuan Hashim, and directed by Raja Ahmad Alauddin was released. 
  • Acquired a 60% stake in Layar Opera Sdn Bhd, a company involved in producing Chinese drama serials, situational comedies and films.
1999
  • Senario The Movie was released and grossed over RM4mil at the box office.
  • GBSB’s management decided to focus solely on movie production and marketing of TV3’s content.
2001
  • Senario Lagi clinched the Special Jury Award – Box Office Film for its highest ticket collection among all films that participated in the 15th Malaysian Film Festival.
  • Lagi Lagi Senario achieved more than RM6.3mil at the box office, the highest grossing local film of the year.
2003
  • Dosa di Kaki Bintang, GBSB’s first drama series was aired on TV3.
  • GBSB sold its equity interest in Layar Opera Sdn Bhd to Golden Satellite Sdn Bhd.

2005

  • GBSB’s management decided to venture into distributing foreign-made films locally hence it released two Indonesian titles, Tentang Dia and Ungu to commercial success. Tentang Dia set the record for the highest grossing Indonesian film in Malaysia.
  • Launched Alternate Studio, GBSB’s film unit that focuses on producing niche and non-traditional movies for a more discerning audience. Alternate Studio released its first title, Salon which was shot entirely on HD, a first for a Malaysian movie.
  • GBSB released three (3) local and two (2) foreign films for the year.
2006
  • GBSB distributed its first big budgeted foreign film, The Banquet, a lush period epic. Heart, a teenage romance, replaced Tentang Dia as the highest grossing Indonesian film released in Malaysia.
  • Alternate Studio’s second feature film, Cinta was released in November to commercial and critical success.
  • GBSB signed volume deals with TV3 & TV9 to produce telemovies and dramas for the tv networks.
  • GBSB screened five (5) local and eight (8) foreign films for the year.
2007
  • Kerana Karina, jointly produced with Alt Media Sdn Bhd, debuted on www.gua.com.my in October. Malaysia’s first online drama series consisting of twenty (20) four-minute episodes was entered into the Malaysian Book of Records.
  • GBSB was given the Anugerah Oscar 6 Special Award for the most active production company in producing films and dramas.
  • Cited in Variety magazine as a major player in the international market.
  • Apart from TV3 & TV9, GBSB signed a volume deal with ntv7 to produce telemovies and dramas.
  • GBSB unveiled four (4) local and eight (8) foreign films for the year.
