KUALA LUMPUR, 18 February 2021 – Media Prima Berhad (“Media Prima” or the “Group”), Malaysia’s leading fully-integrated media group, is pleased to announce the appointment of Rafiq Razali, aged 36, as Group Executive Director, reporting to the Group Managing Director effective 18 February 2021.
Rafiq first joined Media Prima in 2016 as the Chief Executive Officer of REV Media Group (“RMG”) (formerly known as Media Prima Digital) where he successfully implemented a business turnaround strategy that propelled the Group to become one of Malaysia’s leading digital media companies in terms of revenue and audience reach. The remarkable turnaround led to significant and consistent revenue growth, turning RMG into a profitable company.
He was also instrumental in the Group’s strategic acquisitions and expansion of its digital asset portfolio. These include the purchase of Rev Asia Holdings Sdn Bhd which instantly delivered a strong youth demographic audience base to the Group. These acquisitions, along with digital assets developed internally by capitalising on Media Prima’s popular intellectual properties, helped solidify Media Prima’s reach as the leading digital platform in Malaysia among mobile users, and as the third highest, behind Google and Facebook, in terms of overall digital audience reach in the country. Under his leadership, RMG also forged strong partnerships and licensing deals with global digital brands such as Mashable, IGN and Technave.
Rafiq was key in Media Prima’s business transformation efforts where he helped unify the Group’s digital strategy across all business subsidiaries. Among his notable achievements to date include the implementation of the Group’s Big Data strategy to deliver real time dashboards and deep audience profiles utilising complex Artificial Intelligence algorithms. His achievements in the organisation culminated when RMG was awarded the 2019 Digital Publisher of the Year by the Malaysian Digital Association.
Commenting on the latest appointment, Datuk (Dr.) Syed Hussian Aljunid, Group Chairman Media Prima said: “The Board welcomes the appointment of Rafiq to the Board of Media Prima. He is also well versed and a respected figure in the digital media landscape having worked in several startup companies prior to joining Media Prima. Datuk (Dr.) Syed Hussian added that Rafiq’s new role at the Group level will enable Media Prima to further explore new opportunities across all media platforms while offering clients with innovative and integrated media solutions.
Rafiq’s career began as a management associate in Maxis Berhad, holding various positions in international business and corporate strategy. In 2011, Rafiq joined Groupon, one of the fastest growing e-commerce companies globally, where he helmed the sales portfolio for the organisation. He was later promoted to Groupon’s Country General Manager in January 2013 after delivering consistent strong performance. He then co-founded KFit in 2015, a fitness subscription company, where he played a critical role in launching the service in eight countries within seven months, and also successfully generating significant capital for the business.
Rafiq holds a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Actuarial Science from Pennsylvania State University, United States. He also completed the ASEAN Senior Management Development Program from the Harvard Business School ACM.
